Taking Action to Take America Back!

Broken Promise

MEMBER INFO

Time after time this administration has ignored the will of the people and has done what ever they wanted to.  Promises of transparency and openness mean nothing to them.

The following fax, written by Elizabeth Cowan,   really expresses my feelings on this.  Please select it and it will be sent to the President, your senators and your representatives.

TEXT OF FAX

[Dear ____________]

Well—it isn’t the first time—and I’m sure it won’t be the last—that the president of our country has broken a campaign promise. Mr. Obama, you are proving to be no different than any other United States president.

During your campaign, you promised, many times, that your presidency would be a transparent one, and as such, every piece of legislation would be posted online for a period of 72 hours so that the American people would know exactly what laws and legislation your administration was considering. Promise? BROKEN!

“ the Senate Finance Committee works through committee amendments to Chairman Max Baucus’s (D-Mont.) mark on the health care bill, the committee today rejected a provision offered by Sen. Jim Bunning (R-Ky.) that would have required that the legislative language and the final cost analysis from the Congressional Budget Office be posted on the committee's Web site for 72 hours before the committee votes on the final bill,” (Congress: You Can Spare Trillions of Our Dollars, But Can’t Spare A Few Days of Extra Time? 09/23/09).

Yes, I understand that it was the Senate Finance Committee that voted to reject the above proposal—but, like the American people, they are under your leadership. You could and SHOULD HAVE advised them to accept Senator Bunning’s proposal to post the bill online and in doing so, kept at least ONE of your campaign promises.

But hey! Why spoil a perfect record of breaking promises?

My confidence in the United States government diminishes every day. You can help to restore that confidence, Mr. Obama, by overriding the vote of the Senate and insisting that all legislation, including the Healthcare reform bill, be posted online for a minimum of 72 hours for the benefit of the people you serve.

Sincerely,
